Haven

Haven

from $28.00

The yarn where it all began, straight from our original flock of North Country Cheviot sheep. Haven is a light worsted 3-ply, spun gently to preserve the natural loft of Cheviot wool. This is a hearty yarn for long-lasting garments you can hand down through the generations, but it’s softer than you might think. It’s yarn for outdoorsy people who work hard and think for themselves, like the sheep that grow it.

Notes on botanical dyes:

  • The yellows come from marigold, daffodil, dyer’s chamomile, dahlia, rudbeckia, and yarrow blossoms grown in the natural dye garden at Oak Knoll Farm. We obtained some eucalyptus leaves from our friends at Thistledew Farm.

  • Sea Glass and April greens are both derived from Black Knight scabiosa flowers.

  • Madrona is a tree native to San Juan Island. It naturally sheds a beautiful rust-colored papery bark that yields a warm, camel-colored dye. This is an almost solid hue.

  • The Hearth Goddess red-brown skeins are dyed with walnut, madrona bark, and madder. The walnuts are gathered from a marvelous big tree on the courthouse lawn in town. These skeins are semi-solid.

  • The Campfire color comes from coreopsis and sulphur cosmos, which we grow in the Oak Knoll gardens. These skeins are almost solid.

  • Madder root gives us the Robin color, a semi-solid. Robin 1 and Robin 2 are different batches, but are very similar and could be blended for a larger project.

  • Each Peach is from pear and plum prunings in the Oak Knoll orchard.

  • Dawn comes from avocado pits and skins we save in the kitchen. Dawn 1 and Dawn 2 are different batches, but are very similar and could be blended for a larger project.

  • Exhausting various dye baths slowly builds color for special batches like Antiquarian 1.
