Our yarn
San Juan Woolworks offers 100% wool yarns grown and processed right here in the islands. Each clip is a unique small batch; the wool reflects the life experience of each sheep since its last shearing and varies with each animal’s age, diet, health, and external factors like weather. We expect to see subtle differences from one shearing to the next, so please be sure to purchase enough yarn for your intended project. If you’ve missed out on a particular yarn, please know that the sheep are growing more fiber right now and we look forward to being able to fulfill your woolly dreams in a future shop update.
Our botanical dyeing is done in very small lots that depend on what we can grow or forage. Please contact us if you are interested in a larger quantity of a particular color. We work with natural dyestuffs known for their lightfastness, but the colors may mellow over time. Certain dyes, like indigo, may rub off on your fingers and needles as you knit. This is called crocking—the dye that didn’t fix to the yarn is transferring off by friction to complete the alchemy of the dye process. The color will wash off your fingers and your garment won’t turn you blue, but you may wish to avoid using pale wood needles for these projects.
We sometimes reserve a few handspinning fleeces at shearing time. If you’d like to create your own custom yarn from our wool, send an email using the Contact link below to inquire about availability.
